Children and Sun
Children’s skin needs special protection from the sun

In children, the natural protective mechanisms of the skin are not yet fully developed – this is even more true for babies and toddlers. This makes the risk of long-term damage particularly high. All the more reason to protect our children especially well!

The most important tips for this are:

Never expose babies to direct sunlight. Try to stay in the shade as much as possible with your child. In any case, avoid the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., as 60% of all UV radiation reaches our skin during this time.

Always use sufficient sunscreen and apply it evenly. Only then can it provide its full protection. Here you can find out how much you need, depending on your child’s age.

Make sure your child wears long clothing and a hat with neck protection for as long as possible.

Apply sufficient sunscreen to all exposed areas, especially the ears, nose, hands, and feet.

Keep in mind that the intensity of the sun’s rays increases when they are reflected, for example, on or in water or on snow. Closely woven clothing can also provide protection in water; however, the protection is significantly reduced once the clothing gets wet.

Use sunscreen that is specifically designed for highly sensitive children's skin.

Pay attention to the UV index. A high UV index means intense sunlight and therefore requires stronger protection.

Reapply sunscreen to your child regularly, because the protective layer can be removed, especially through swimming, drying off, or playing in sand and dust.

Use sunscreens with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 and make sure the product protects from UVA and has a UVA label.

Reapplying sunscreen multiple times does not extend its maximum duration of protection, but only helps to maintain it.

It’s the amount that counts

Only if you apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen will the full protective effect be achieved – completely independent of the SPF. It needs to be 2 mg per cm² of skin.
